PLPLANTAR FASCIITIS - CAUSES & CURE

Dear Fellow Runner,
After running the first 4 of my 8 marathons, I began suffering from the early beginnings of what has become for me and on-again off-again struggle with plantar fasciitis. I have had custom orthotics prescribed by a podiatrist only to find that after a couple years the orthotic, itself, was making the condition more chronic. For a time, after chucking the orthotics, I did fine until I reached the 12-13 mile distance and my plantar fascia began to break down again.

So, you can well understand why I'm always on the search for helpful stretches and exercises to prevent the condition, cure it, and keep it at bay so I can get to running more than 5 & 10K's.

I'm not overweight, and I never run two consecutive days in a row any more. And this seems to help some. I offer these resources as possibly helpful to you.

I have finally found an over-the-counter,
heat moldable orthotic that has worked
to cure and control my chronic plantar
fasciitis problems: Sof Sole Adapt

I'm not selling them, but click the pair

you to a dealer who does.

This video gives demonstrates and explains the stretches and the "plantar fascia roll" which is used to break up scar tissue that results as this condition is healing.
One note of caution. It is important that you do not ignore plantar fasciitis and continue running through it if it worsens. While it is often possible to keep running on a reduced and less strenuous level while treating your plantar fasciitis, it is also possible to tear the plantar fascia to the point of requiring surgery. Sometimes it is actually best to take 6-8 weeks off from your running while continuing to treat the plantar fasciitis.

I also recommend you see a good podiatrist to get sound medical advice by someone who can properly diagnose your condition and monitor your treatment and recovery. I am not a medical doctor, osteopathic specialist, podiatrist or any similiarly qualified medical specialist. My comments are purely advisory based on the experience of an intermitently injured runner.
I'm including this discussion of orthotics purley as information. I'm not making any recommendation or endorsement of the company and its product. My custom orthotic was designed on the philosophy that this video is critical of, so I'm intrigued.

This video is from the Mayo Clinic and gives some good visuals on the mechanics of Plantar Fasciitis.
This video clip shows a new taping technique for plantar fasciitis using kinesi-tape. This technique is far simpler and requires much less taping than traditional taping approaches.
Traditional taping technique for creating support for the plantar fascia. My skin is very sensitive (allergic) to the adhesive in athletic tape and I cannot tolerate tape-to-skin. Also, I have found that running any distance with a direct tape-to-bare skin results in ripping the skin off my foot.

To overcome this problem, I spray my foot with Tuff Skin (TM) and wrap with a foundation of a thin foam rubber tape which I ordered on line. The tuff skin creates a barrier and helps the foam adhere to the foot. Then I can tape over this. The only draw back is that the Tuff Skin is a real chore to remove. But, to save my arch and keep running, it is worth the hassle!
